Save a look and use it again

Keep one look across episodes, clients, and machines.

A look you like is worth keeping. Save it and every future project can match to it, so episode four looks like episode one.

Save

After a match you are happy with, save it as a Look from the panel. Give it a name you will recognize in six months.

Reuse

When you pick a reference for a new match, your saved Looks are one of the choices, next to timeline clips, film stocks, and stills from your computer. Pick the Look, hit Match, and the new footage moves toward it.

What gets stored

The Look itself is color data, numbers. So it follows your account: reinstall MOVON or sign in on another machine and your Looks are there.

One note: when you save a Look, one small preview frame of its reference is uploaded too, so the Look keeps its thumbnail across machines. If you work under NDA and would rather not, turn that off on the Account page in the panel. The Look still works, it just loses its picture.

Who we are.

MOVON was built by two people: a filmmaker who spent fifteen years watching color eat the hours that belonged to the story, and an engineer who had spent those same years teaching machines to see. One lived the problem. The other could build the model to solve it. MOVON Match is what happened when they compared notes.

Fifteen years in production as a one-man crew: producing, directing, shooting, then sitting down to cut it all. Hundreds of television episodes, documentaries filmed across different countries, and every stage in between. He knows exactly where color goes wrong in an edit, because for years it went wrong on his own timelines.

The engineer

An AI engineer who has worked on image processing and machine learning since university, building models that understand what a picture is made of. His career runs through some of the biggest names in imaging and streaming. He is the reason MOVON Match is a real model on a real server, not a filter with a clever name.

Old copies stop piling up, and recovery goes to a version that runs

fixInstalled versions were never cleaned up. One machine had twelve copies of MOVON on it, 5.4 GB, because only the automatic update removed anything and the installer never did. Cleanup now runs on every path, including startup, so a machine that has already filled up shrinks on its own. The running version, the one in use and a verified fallback are always kept, and a half-finished download is dropped after an hour.
fixGoing back to an earlier version could land on one that would not start. It counted failed launches and stepped back one version without checking whether that one worked, so a crash could be traded for another crash and called a recovery. The candidate is now proven before it is used: the program runs, its pieces are present and its signature holds.
improvedWhen no version can be proven, MOVON stops and says so rather than hitting the same wall over and over. The panel offers a reinstall, and the last remaining version is never removed.

Installing no longer drags a moved machine backwards

fixEvery install pulled the engine back to its old location. A machine already on the new layout was quietly pointed at the old copy, and the next launch had to notice and repair itself. Install now picks the target at install time and leaves a valid, equal or newer version alone. Only a first install, a broken one or a genuinely newer package moves anything. Reinstalling with this package also rescues a machine stuck in that repair loop.
fixThe permissions repair could still be missed. The status page ran its own health check and could announce an engine update over a plugin folder it could not write to. It follows the same order everywhere now, so the right button is the one offered.
fixFeedback written before an account existed now finds its owner. Email matching ignores case, and notes left under that address are attached when the account is created.

The engine was locking itself up on every launch

fixThe engine froze every time it started. The update check waited on something it was already holding, and the thread stayed there forever. Panel requests queued up behind it until nothing answered at all, so the engine looked completely dead from outside. "Check for updates" sitting on Checking, the setup screen appearing with the engine already installed, feedback refusing to send: all of it was this one fault. It had been in every release since 0.7.8.
improvedRec709 was removed from the panel. It was the only place MOVON spoke in color space terms while the rest of the product matches looks, and it is work Premiere's own color management already does. Rec709 matches you have already made are still on disk and still render the same color, the label now reads Standard.
fixThe same clip in two sequences could take on the other one's color. A fallback that identified clips by filename turned into a race between sequences, with the most recent match winning. When one filename appears in several sequences with different grades, that fallback is now dropped: a clip left ungraded is fixed with one more match, the wrong color is a mistake you would never see.
newBeta rewards. Every note and feature request you send lands in one place, and every reward granted is written down once and not recalculated. The clock starts at your first successful match rather than at signup. A feature request has to say what it does and which problem it solves.
newRewarded credits can be spent. A granted reward becomes a usable balance straight away, and once the monthly allowance runs out it draws from the package expiring soonest.
fixA reward with a start date could be claimed before that date arrived. Both routes check the window now.
fixAn account that chose a free year starting later had no credits until then. The ordinary monthly allowance covers the gap, and the account returns to the free tier quietly when the year ends.
improvedTwo reminders go out before a free year ends, at thirty days and at seven, and every accepted note gets a thank you.

Nested clips stay put, and film stocks show their color

fixClips inside a nested sequence jumped upward on a second match. The letterbox correction decides whether the top band is a baked black bar by looking for content in it, and a grade earlier in the chain maps that black through its LUT and lifts it, so the band read as picture and an already-placed frame was moved again. It now also requires the band to be more than one flat dark color: a lifted bar is a single value, real picture carries noise.
newFilm Stocks shows what each stock does. Every stock now carries the same reference frame graded with it, instead of the same generic film icon eight times.
fixThe Film Stocks tab had not been opening at all. A badge added to My Looks was copied into the Recent and Film Stocks tabs without one of its definitions, so both threw on every render and the stock grid sat on loading forever. Four releases carried it.
newRemoving a sequence card can remove the MOVON Match effect from its clips too. Matching a long sequence puts the effect on every clip, nested ones included, and there was no way back short of doing it by hand. It is a checkbox, off by default, and clips another sequence still uses keep their effect.
improvedCancel reads again. While a match runs, the percentage in the middle of the button turns into Cancel when the pointer is over it, instead of a small x off to the side.
improvedBacking up a look's preview is one setting on the Account page now, on by default, instead of a question asked every time you save a look.
fixA clip inside a nest could report that Premiere returned no file path, blaming ProRes RAW. The path comes back empty for a moment in nested contexts; it retries, and says something true when it genuinely cannot read one.
improvedRecent and Film Stocks tiles are the same size as My Looks.

Removing MOVON no longer deletes your work

fixDragging MOVON to the Trash deleted everything it had ever stored for you: your looks, their previews, your grades and the analysis cache. Reinstalling brought back an empty product, which is why looks kept disappearing no matter what we fixed in the sync. Your work now lives outside the folder an uninstall clears, and the uninstaller asks before it deletes anything, keeping it by default.
improvedA look can survive its source going away. The frame its analysis used is kept alongside it, so deleting the clip, moving the project or unplugging the drive no longer strands the look.
fixMatching got about 65 percent faster. A pair took 3.2 seconds and now takes 1.1, after measuring the inference and compression settings on the actual server rather than assuming them.
fixIf your plugin folder was locked, MOVON offered a one click repair and then took it away: the offer was shown once and never again for the rest of the session, so you could sit in front of a screen that had the fix and never see it. It also re-downloaded the whole package on every check.
fixA full disk reported itself as mkstemp failed: No space left on device. It says your disk is full.
fixSelecting clips that already match your reference is not an error, and no longer opens a red dialog to say so.

The first run works

fixWithout the engine installed, the panel opened anyway and let you browse, then demanded the engine at some random later moment. It now opens straight to a setup screen with nothing behind it, three plain steps instead of a Terminal command, and a Need help button that works even with the engine down, so someone stuck there can finally reach us.
fixErrors that meant the engine was not running said the network request had failed. They say what is actually wrong.
fixMatch went dead after a successful match and stayed dead. Closing and reopening the panel did not help, only restarting Premiere did. A matched selection now offers Re-match and stays clickable.
fixRec709 conversions could never save their result. The save step re-read the reference, could not see a fixed target, and the whole card write was refused. It looked like a nested sequence problem; every fixed-target run failed the same way.
fixDark clips were skipped when they did not deserve it. Only the head of the clip was ever sampled, so a fireworks shot that opens on night sky was rejected whole while the bursts two seconds later were never looked at. Eight points across the clip are sampled now. The thresholds are deliberately unchanged: measured against real footage, usable frames sit well above them, and loosening them would start accepting frames with no color in them.
fixSaved looks never sent their previews, so a reinstall brought the library back without pictures. Both directions were reading the wrong store. A wiped library also kept its sync position, which hid every look older than it.
fixA look saved under an older engine did nothing at all when you clicked it. Those looks are marked now, and one whose source is still on the machine quietly re-analyzes itself and works again.
newAdd in the Looks Library takes a video or an image from disk and saves it as a look.
improvedThe skipped clips notice can be dismissed, and it now has a defined lifetime: it reports the last match and lives until the next one.
fixCheck for updates could sit on Checking forever.

Seven fixes to the sequence card

fixA card that failed to save could take the color you already had with it. The rebuilt sidecar was built from the old cards, so the new keys pointed at nothing and those clips rendered ungraded. A failed save now leaves every clip on the grade it already had, which is what the message promised.
fixA cut whose grade had been cleared still drew as matched.
improvedProblem Clips names the exact cut. Two cuts of one file are two rows, and Show or Remove acts on the one you picked instead of every clip that shares the filename.

Rec709 conversions stay put

fixRec709 conversions had never been saved to the project. The clips converted and the color applied, but the result could not be written back, so it warned that it had failed and the color did not survive a reopen. It saves like any other match now.
fixA finished Rec709 group drew as an empty card asking for a reference, because it had none. It shows as Rec.709.

One panel, and updates that survive a slow connection

fixInstalling from the Adobe Marketplace and then adding the engine left two panels called MOVON Match in Premiere, and neither of them updated again. Whichever way you install, one panel remains.
improvedThe update package is large and had a fixed time limit, which meant it failed every time on any connection below a certain speed. Downloads resume where they stopped and only give up when the connection genuinely stalls.
fixSome Macs downloaded every new version, put it in place, and then started the old copy anyway at launch. A machine could take months of updates and still run an old build. It is detected and repaired at startup.
newA Repair permissions button in the panel. The real cause of "plugin folder is not writable" turned out to be an access rule Adobe installers leave behind rather than folder ownership, which is why earlier attempts were not enough. When the engine cannot write there it now explains what happened and offers a one-time repair.

Rec.709 in one press, and a panel that fits a narrow dock

newA Rec709 button beside Match converts log clips to Rec.709 without picking a reference first. Select at least one clip and press it. Match and Rec709 share the same progress and cancel behaviour and cannot run at once.
fixAt the smallest panel size the Looks Library opened behind the Match bar and was almost unreadable, and the account menu overflowed with no way to scroll it. Both measure the bar now and stay inside it.
fixLook sync stopped altogether when one record came back malformed, which blocked every later sync too. The bad record is skipped and the rest goes through.
improvedDragging MOVON.app to the Trash now removes the engine, the Premiere plugin and the panel with it, instead of leaving them behind.

A failed save is no longer reported as a success

fixOn a rare save error the panel could still say the match had worked while the color had not been written to the project. It says plainly when a save fails, so you know to run it again.
fixWork done on an inactive sequence card could affect a different open sequence.
fixSequence cards sort by most recently matched, and the coloured-clip counter on each card was wrong. It is also readable by a screen reader now, along with the panel's dialogs.

Matching in nested sequences, and groups that leave each other alone

fixDeleting one group could strip the color from a different group in the same sequence. The panel was refreshing whatever sat under the playhead rather than the clips it had actually changed, so a clip at the start of the timeline lost a match that was still valid. Only the deleted group's own clips are refreshed.
fixMatching inside a nested sequence follows the clip's identity rather than its position on the timeline. The old approach read a position from the selection, and that reading was sometimes wrong or missing, so the match could land on the wrong clip.
fixIn the sequence graph, a matched group colours only its own matched positions. A second use of the same source elsewhere in the timeline is no longer coloured as though it had been matched.
fixUngrouped clips from a multicam cut of the same file were sometimes flagged as belonging to another group. Where the position is genuinely ambiguous no warning is raised and the clips match normally.
improvedAn uploaded reference can be starred into My Looks straight from the Reference card, rather than only from the Looks Library.
